Let's Meet Jack Sawyer

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected edge rusher Jack Sawyer from Ohio State University in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Who is Jack Sawyer?

Sawyer was born on May 6, 2002, in Columbus, Ohio. He grew up in Pickerington, Ohio and attended Pickerington High School North. After making the varsity team as a backup tight end, he was moved to defensive end and finished the season with 58 tackles, 16.5 tackles for a loss and 3.5 sacks.

Due to injuries, Sawyer took over as the Panthers’ starting quarterback during his junior season. During the same season, Sawyer was named the Ohio Capital Conference-Ohio Division Defensive Player of the Year after recording 13.5 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss before suffering a torn MCL in the state playoffs. Sawyer opted not to play in his senior season after uncertainties surrounding Covid-19.

Sawyer was a five-star recruit and chose the Ohio State Buckeyes over offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Oklahoma.

During his career at Ohio State, Sawyer played a total of 54 games and accumulated 144 tackles, 29 tackles for a loss, 23 sacks, 1 interception, six forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, and two fumbles returned for touchdowns.

Strengths

  • Great instincts

  • Tough, will run you over to get to the ball

  • Always has feet moving…eyes are always on the ball

  • Relentless with strong hands

  • Has several top end moves to get to quarterback

  • Smart football player….High IQ keeps him involved in plays

Weaknesses

  • Athleticism is questionable….gets away with a ton of tenacity

  • Explosion off the snap is limited

  • Change of direction is not smooth and with lack of top end speed, this could keep him from making plays away from his edge.

  • Lack of physical bend hinders his contact off the snap

What do the Steelers get?

The Steelers add another interesting prospect at the edge position. With T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig and Sawyer, Pittsburgh should be set for several years to come, or could trade a piece to help another position. Sawyer plays hard and never quits, Pittsburgh will love him.

Welcome to Pittsburgh Jack Sawyer!
