Welcome to Pittsburgh Jonnu Smith

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins shocked the football world with a trade on Monday. The Steelers obtained cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith, along with a 2027 7th round pick from the Miami Dolphins for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth round pick.

Here is a look at tight end Jonnu Smith.

Jonnu Smith'a Background

Jonnu Andre Smith was born on August 22, 1995, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Ocala, Florida, where he attended West Port High School and earned a scholarship to Florida International University (FIU). At FIU, Smith played four seasons (2013–2016), catching 178 passes for 2,001 yards and 18 touchdowns, and earned First-team All-Conference USA honors as a sophomore and junior.

Smith entered the NFL when the Tennessee Titans selected him in the third round (100th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons in Tennessee before signing with the New England Patriots in 2021. After two injury-plagued years in New England, he joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2023 and then signed a two-year deal with the Miami Dolphins in 2024, where he posted career highs in receptions (88), yards (884), and touchdowns (8) en route to his first Pro Bowl selection.

With his blend of speed, blocking chops and route-running, Smith gives the Steelers a versatile weapon. Expect Arthur Smith’s offense to use him as:

  • Inline tight end in “12 personnel” sets

  • Slot receiver motioned off the line

  • H-Back/fullback in heavy formations
