Wondering About the Wide Receivers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are experiencing significant changes across their roster. They have switched quarterbacks and running backs, and traded their number one wide receiver to make room for another top receiver. However, questions remain about the wide receiver lineup. Sportsvival addresses these questions today.

To start, the Steelers traded a second-round pick for former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf. The team has needed a player like Metcalf for some time. Although they had George Pickens as their number one receiver, he was recently traded to the Cowboys, making Metcalf the new number one. While Metcalf is capable of handling this role, the question remains: who will help alleviate some of the pressure on him?

Wide receiver coach Zach Azzanni believes Calvin Austin is the Steelers' number two receiver. Austin is an incredibly talented player with remarkable speed and excellent hands. However, his small stature (5'7") could be a disadvantage against taller defensive backs. Despite this, his speed, strength, and proficiency in the slot position suggest that concerns about his size may be overstated.

Remember Roman Wilson? The Steelers drafted him in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft. The team expects him to make significant progress this season. Similar to Austin, Wilson is a 5'10" speedster who excels at creating separation in man coverage and exploiting zone defenses. Although he struggled last season, playing only a few snaps before an injury sidelined him, the Steelers are optimistic about his potential.

The wide receiver room also includes experienced players like Robert Woods, Scotty Miller, and Ben Skowronek. While these veterans may not be the stars of the team, they provide valuable depth and will be utilized throughout the season.

With the addition of Aaron Rodgers, the Steelers might consider trading for his former teammate, Allen Lazard. At 6'5", Lazard has a strong rapport with Rodgers, making him a logical acquisition. If the Steelers manage to get Lazard, it could solidify their wide receiver lineup, with Metcalf and Lazard as the top two receivers and Austin and Wilson as speedy slot options.

Lastly, there's Roc Taylor, an undrafted free agent from Memphis. Standing at 6'3" and weighing over 200 pounds, Taylor is a physical specimen with great hands and the ability to dominate in man coverage. He had impressive college seasons, particularly in 2023 when he recorded 1,083 yards and averaged 15 yards per catch. Although not guaranteed a roster spot, Taylor has the potential to surprise and become a valuable asset for the Steelers.

In conclusion, the Steelers' wide receiver situation is evolving, but with players like Metcalf, Austin, Wilson, and potentially Lazard and Taylor, the team could have a formidable lineup sooner than expected.
