Today we scout:

SG- Tre Johnson

Texas

Richard Earl “Tre” Johnson III was born on March 7, 2006 in Dallas, Texas.

Johnson attended Lake Highlands High School and was a standout basketball player. During his sophomore season, he averaged 23.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

During his junior year, Johnson and Lake Highlands took part in the City of Palms Tournament and averaged 23 points per game. During the regular season, he led the Wildcats to their first state championship since 1968 and scored 29 points in the team’s 55-44 win against Beaumont United High School in the championship game. On the season, Johnson averaged 21.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game and was named Texas Mr. Basketball.

After his junior season, he transferred to Link Academy in Branson, Missouri. Johnson’s numbers were 15.5 points, 3.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds per contest. He was selected to play in the 2024 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game.

Johnson was ranked the top overall recruit by 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals throughout his junior season until he was surpassed by Dylan Harper in the summer of 2023. Johnson was a consensus five-star pick who committed to Texas after considering an offer from Baylor.

Johnson broke Kevin Durant’s freshman single-game program record by scoring 39 points in an overtime loss to Arkansas. The freshman shooting guard was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and Second-team All-SEC after averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.

At the conclusion of the season, Johnson entered the 2025 NBA Draft.

What does the tape say?

Positives

  • He creates on the perimeter

  • Can score at every level.. One of the best pure scorers coming out.

  • Confidence is sky high

  • Speed and quickness lead to beating defenders off the dribble

  • Plays with effort on defense. Is a reliable defender in one-on-one matchups

Negatives

  • Has moments where he is only focused on creating shots, limiting opportunities for teammates

  • Over dribbles, lacks elite playmaking skills

  • His shot selection can come into question

  • Struggles getting through screens and can be flat footed while playing zone. Is better man-to-man

Sportsvival’s Final Thoughts:

Tre Johnson is one of the top prospects in terms of filling up the basket. He can drive to the rim, and has the creativity to be a weapon on the perimeter. He may struggle to be a shut down defender in the NBA, but should step right into a starting spot on day one with his scoring prowess.

Tre Johnson reminds Sportsvival of Brooklyn Nets’ guard Cam Thomas. Both players have the potential to take over games when they get hot. Streaky shooters, but when they are on…they are on.
