2022 Draft Profile
6’ 1” 225 LBS
Howell passed for over 3,000 yards as a high school freshman and sophomore. His junior year he once again threw for 3,000 yards but also added 1,594 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns on the ground. Howell was proving his dual threat ability and was named a 4 star recruit by 247 sports. Sam would end up for his high school career amassing 13,415 yards passing to go along with 3,621 yards rushing. Before his senior year he would commit to Florida St. After a great senior season he would flip his commitment and sign with North Carolina.
Dual-threat quarterback with an NFL caliber arm. Reminds some scouts of a Baker Mayfield type. Quick release and is very good at reading the defenses thrown his way. Steps up well in pocket and usually hits his receivers in stride to set up bigger plays.
Though he has an NFL caliber arm he can at times show some inconsistency and overthrow some potential big play targets. Sometimes locks into the first read instead of letting the full play develop. At times puts too much velocity on some passes instead of finding some touch.
Should be one of the first quarterbacks off the board. As with Spencer Rattler he could go as early as 1-2 in draft or as pushed back as middle of first. I personally like Howell over Rattler right now. That could change as season goes on.
