Pirates Farm Report 8-11-21 by JT

In the past two weeks the Pirates have added several young top prospects to the organization between trade deadline and the draft. The likes of  IF-Tucupita Marcano, 1B-Michael Chavis and OF-Jack Suwinski came over in trades. C-Henry Davis and SP-Bubba Chandler were two of the top draft picks. Going forward Pittsburgh should be a solid top 3 in MLB Farm Systems.

FCL Pirates (Gold and Black)

C-Henry Davis- Hit a homerun in his first professional game and is 3-7 with 1-HR and 4-RBI.

P-Brennan Malone- Was sent to the FCL for more IP. Overall, he is 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA

P- Anthony Solometo- The second-round lefty has not entered a game.

The talent down here could deepen even more as Lonnie White Jr. and Bubba Chandler may join the ranks. Henry Davis will get some at-bats but not play daily.

Bradenton Marauders (Low A) 51-32   5-GB

OF- Hudson Head- Hitting just .214 but has showed his power with a team leading 12 HR. Pirates are excited about Head’s future

C- Endy Rodriguez- Was the top catcher in the organization before the Bucs drafted Henry Davis first overall. Has been consistent all year at .277 with 10-HR.

SP- Santiago Florez- Does not get the hype of some of the other young arms but has been amazing in 2021. 5-2 with a 1.37 ERA.  In 9 starts.

SP-Eddy Yean- Has struggled and has dropped out of the Pirates top 15 prospects. Still young and still a good prospect.4-2 with a 5.18 ERA

SP- Jared Jones- Jones is starting to rise up the prospect ranking ladder. 3-2 with a 3.33 and has a very live arm

Bradenton has played some good baseball as of late behind Florez, Yean and Jones pitching. Head and Rodriguez continue to be the most talked about prospects from Bradenton.

Greensboro Grasshoppers (High A) 53-32  7-GB

SS-Liover Peguero- .255 with 11 HR- Peguero still considered one of the top SS prospects in the organization

2B-Nick Gonzales- .270 with 9 HR- Gonzales is starting to heat up again as his average was down in the .230’s a month ago. Bright future for Nick in the burgh.

1B- Aaron Shackelford- .211 with 18 HR’s. Not really in the prospect talk but with 18 HR maybe he can improve upon his average and climb the ladder.

SP- Quinn Priester- 4-3 3.09- Top pitching prospect in the organization. Should see Altoona soon.

SP-Carmen Mlodzinski- 2-2  2.63- Carmen has been a very consistent pitcher and has solidified himself as a top 10 prospect.

SP-Michael Burrows- 2-2  2.25 – As good as Priester and Mlodzinski have been, Burrows may be pitching the best. Burrows is flying up the top 30 prospects in organization

This Greensboro team has so much future MLB talent on it. The future of the Pirates starting staff can be seen right now in Greensboro.

Altoona Curve  (AA)  46-37  5.5 GB

1B-Mason Martin- .255 with 19 HR.- Mason has improved on his average while still hitting bombs. Martin could be in AAA soon.

OF- Cal Mitchell- .268 with 11 HR- Mitchell sort of a forgotten prospect in the system, appears to be on fast track

OF- Jack Suwinski- .317 in 41 AB with 1-HR- Suwinksi, part of the Adam Frazier deal is an intriguing prospect with a ton of power

OF-Matthew Fraizer- .450 in 20 AB with 1-HR- Fraizer our MINOR LEAGUER OF THE WEEK was just recently promoted to Altoona from Greensboro. He now has 21 HR between Greensboro (20) and Altoona (1)

C- Carter Bins- .281 32 AB- Acquired from Seattle in Tyler Anderson trade. Could be the next catcher for Pittsburgh. He could hold the job until Davis or Rodriguez are ready.

SS-Oneil Cruz/ Roansy Contreras- Both are still injured but Cruz, the teams #1 prospect appears to be getting close to resuming play.

With the additions of OF-Jack Suwinski and C-Carter Bins in trades and the promotion of OF-Matthew Fraizer, Altoona is a very interesting team to watch.

Indianapolis Indians   (AAA)- 42-42 5.5 GB

OF-Anthony Alford- Was ridiculously hot before being called up to Pittsburgh. His season stats were .307 with 14-HR. Hopefully Alford can reach his MLB potential

1B/3B- Michael Chavis- .417 24 AB 3-HR- Sportsvival recently wrote an article about how the Chavis deal could go down as the best deadline deal. Chavis has some big HR potential.

UTL-Tucupita Marcano- .239 46-AB- Marcano, the prize of the Adam Frazier deal, is said to be a future version of Frazier. Tucupita can play just about anywhere and is a guy Cherington has wanted for a while

The two newcomers Chavis and Marcano are worth keeping an eye on. It is possible we could see one or possibly both in September. Not much in the way of pitching prospects in Indy. Beau Sulser a 10th rounder from 2017 is 5-5 with a 4.41 ERA.
