Silovs shines in season opener

Arturs Silovs delivered a statement in his Penguins debut, stopping all 25 shots for his first regular-season shutout as Pittsburgh blanked the New York Rangers 3-0 in the opener.

Justin Brazeau opened the scoring late in the first period after Evgeni Malkin won an offensive-zone faceoff and fed him for a highlight‑reel backhand that beat Igor Shesterkin, giving the Penguins a 1-0 lead.

Pittsburgh closed the game with two late empty-net goals; Justin Brazeau added an empty‑netter at 17:48 of the third and Blake Lizotte followed 20 seconds later to make it 3-0, putting the result beyond doubt.

Silovs was steady and composed all night, controlling rebounds, handling traffic in front of the crease, and making the timely saves that preserved the lead and allowed the Penguins to play with confidence.

Head Coach Dan Muse earned a signature opening-night win, guiding a complete team performance that mixed veteran poise and rookie energy, emphasized structure in the defensive zone, and trusted his goaltender to finish the job.

Two teenagers, Ben Kindel and Harrison Brunicke, made the Penguins’ opening-day roster and skated in the opener, giving the lineup youthful depth and signaling the organization’s willingness to integrate prospects into meaningful NHL minutes.

The Penguins played a complete 60 minutes, winning puck battles, limiting second-chance opportunities, and finishing on the scoreboard; Pittsburgh returns home to host the New York Islanders on Thursday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m.
