Well, That Was Fun

The Pittsburgh Steelers squared off against their AFC North neighbor, the Cleveland Browns, earlier today. The Browns haven’t won a regular-season game in Pittsburgh since 1999. So… what happened?

The opening half was a slog for both offenses. The Steelers managed just three field goals, while the Browns leaned on rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel to ignite their attack. Gabriel threw a staggering 52 times, yet Cleveland could only muster nine total points.

Things looked far more cohesive for Pittsburgh after halftime. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers found his (hopefully) new favorite target in tight end Darnell Washington, who delivered his most impactful performance as a pro. Washington was everywhere—active, reliable, and explosive. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith finally seemed to realize that involving Washington opens up consistent play-action opportunities. And as any seasoned football fan knows, establishing the run game is essential, but without a credible passing threat, it all falls apart.

One unit that deserves more praise? The Steelers’ offensive line. They completely neutralized Myles Garrett and didn’t allow a single sack against one of the NFL’s most dominant defenses. Every member of that line, especially Broderick Jones, and the coaching staff deserve their praise! If this group continues to gel, they could be building something truly memorable.

This was one of the most well-prepared and well-coached games the Steelers have played in quite some time. Yes, there were a few uncharacteristic penalties, but considering how disciplined they’ve been all season, it’s fair to chalk that up to typical AFC North football. Unless it becomes a trend, it’s not worth overanalyzing.

For the first time in what feels like years, the Steelers didn’t need a last-minute miracle to secure the win. Sure, the Browns’ offense is underwhelming, but their defense is elite. For Pittsburgh’s defense to go toe-to-toe with Cleveland’s and respond to every challenge? That’s a glowing endorsement of the team’s depth, preparation, and coaching. More praise!

As of now, the Steelers sit comfortably at 4–1. The AFC North? It’s in chaos. The Browns are… well, still the Browns. The Bengals have found a spark with newly acquired Joe Flacco under center, but their defense remains suspect. Meanwhile, the Ravens are so decimated by injuries that their defense is on pace to become the first in NFL history to allow 600 points in a season. Ouch.

No one’s handing Pittsburgh the division crown just yet, but they control their own destiny. They’ve beaten the teams they needed to beat, and, refreshingly, they haven’t had to rely on outside help to climb the standings. It’s as satisfying as a crisp fall afternoon.

Next up: a Thursday night showdown in Cincinnati against Joe Flacco and the Bengals. Kickoff is at 8:15 PM. If the Steelers can exorcise their prime-time demons, they’ll be sitting at 5–1 and cruising atop the AFC North.
