Sportsvival’s Week 7 Pick-6: Big Ten Showdown Headlines a Loaded Six-Pack

Brought to you by First Due Plumbing

The deeper we get into October, the harder it becomes to hide. Conference contenders face tougher tests, playoff hopefuls run out of room for mistakes, and NFL prospects get opportunities to prove themselves against better competition. Week 7 delivers all three, with Ohio State’s trip to Indiana leading our six-pack. Notre Dame heads into a difficult environment at BYU, Alabama visits Tennessee, and four more ranked teams square off in a pair of games that could shake up the conference races.

All rankings are from the Sportsvival Week 7 Top 25. All kickoff times are Eastern.

1) No. 5 Ohio State at No. 4 Indiana

Saturday, October 17, noon | FOX

Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, Indiana

This is the main event. Indiana has earned its place among the country’s best, but Ohio State brings the kind of offensive firepower that can turn one defensive mistake into seven points. With Big Ten positioning and playoff implications attached, expect the intensity to arrive well before kickoff.

The first question for Indiana is the same one every Ohio State opponent must answer: What do you do about Jeremiah Smith? The former Impact HVAC Player of the Week enters this matchup with 48 receptions, 916 yards and 11 touchdowns through six games. Commit extra coverage to him and Julian Sayin can work elsewhere. Leave him isolated and you are asking your cornerbacks to survive one of college football’s toughest assignments. Ohio State

Indiana needs to make this a complete football game. That means protecting quarterback Josh Hoover, sustaining possessions and finishing drives with touchdowns. Curt Cignetti’s team cannot afford empty trips after moving into scoring territory. The Hoosiers also need their home crowd to become a factor when Ohio State faces obvious passing situations.

Three players to watch: Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State QB Julian Sayin and Indiana QB Josh Hoover. Smith is the premier scouting attraction, while the quarterbacks’ decisions under pressure could determine the outcome. Ohio State

Sportsvival prediction: Ohio State 31, Indiana 27. Indiana makes the Buckeyes earn it, but Sayin and Smith produce the decisive touchdown in the fourth quarter.

2) No. 3 Notre Dame at No. 6 BYU

Saturday, October 17, 7:30 p.m. | ABC

LaVell Edwards Stadium, Provo, Utah

Notre Dame heads west for a major road examination. Provo offers BYU a chance to turn a nationally televised matchup into a statement, while the Irish have an opportunity to strengthen their position near the top of our rankings.

For Notre Dame, the priority is handling the environment without becoming impatient. Quarterback CJ Carr needs to take available completions, keep the offense ahead of the chains and avoid giving BYU short fields. An early lead would help the Irish settle in, but this is the kind of game where responding to an opponent’s scoring drive matters just as much as starting fast.

BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier presents a different challenge because defenses must account for his legs as well as his arm. Notre Dame’s edge defenders need disciplined rush lanes, and its linebackers must tackle when Bachmeier escapes. With running back LJ Martin expected to miss the game because of a lower-leg injury, Bachmeier’s ability to extend possessions becomes even more important. Deseret News

Three players to watch: Notre Dame QB CJ Carr, BYU QB Bear Bachmeier and Notre Dame LB Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa. Carr’s road composure, Bachmeier’s movement and Viliamu-Asa’s ability to help contain the quarterback are central to this matchup.

Sportsvival prediction: Notre Dame 30, BYU 20. BYU keeps the pressure on into the second half, but Notre Dame finishes more drives and gradually takes control.

3) No. 7 Alabama at No. 15 Tennessee

Saturday, October 17, 3:30 p.m. | ABC

Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tennessee

The Third Saturday in October rarely needs additional promotion. Alabama on the road at Tennessee brings rivalry emotion, a demanding environment and another important checkpoint in the SEC race. Comped

Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell must manage the noise and recognize when a possession calls for patience. His ability to create explosive plays is valuable, but forcing the ball into coverage would give Tennessee exactly the opening it wants. Receiver Lotzeir Brooks offers an option to turn a short completion into something much bigger.

Tennessee’s quarterback situation remains a major storyline, with Faizon Brandon working back from a shoulder injury and George MacIntyre having handled the start against Arkansas. Whoever takes the snaps needs support from the running game. Asking the quarterback to rescue too many third-and-long situations would make an already difficult assignment considerably tougher.

Three players to watch: Alabama QB Keelon Russell, Alabama WR Lotzeir Brooks and Tennessee QB George MacIntyre, whose role depends on Brandon’s availability. Russell and Brooks give Alabama a dangerous connection, while Tennessee needs efficient quarterback play.

Sportsvival prediction: Alabama 27, Tennessee 23. The crowd keeps Tennessee in it, but Alabama finds enough offense late to escape Knoxville.

4) No. 13 Missouri at No. 10 Ole Miss

Saturday, October 17, 3:30 p.m. | SEC Network

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Oxford, Mississippi

This matchup deserves serious attention. Missouri brings a physical running game into Oxford, while Ole Miss has a quarterback capable of making the Tigers pay when possessions turn into a scoring contest. Both teams have an opportunity to climb in the SEC conversation.

Missouri running back Jamal Roberts, our Week 5 Impact HVAC Player of the Week, continues to demand the spotlight. He followed his breakout performance against Florida with 222 rushing yards and two touchdowns against Texas A&M. Through six games, he has 828 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Ole Miss must finish tackles because initial contact has done little to stop him lately.

Roberts also gives Missouri a way to control the pace and keep Trinidad Chambliss on the sideline. For the Rebels, early scoring would make that approach harder to maintain. Chambliss needs to create productive possessions without handing Missouri additional opportunities through turnovers.

Three players to watch: Missouri RB Jamal Roberts, Missouri WR Cayden Lee and Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss. Roberts supplies the power, Lee gives Missouri a downfield threat against his former program, and Chambliss is the player who can force the Tigers to chase points.

Sportsvival prediction: Ole Miss 34, Missouri 30. Roberts delivers another strong performance, but the Rebels make one more scoring play at home.

5) No. 20 Oklahoma State at No. 16 Houston

Saturday, October 17, 7:30 p.m. | FOX

TDECU Stadium, Houston, Texas

Here is a Big 12 matchup with real value for both programs. Oklahoma State and Houston have worked themselves into our Top 25, and a victory Saturday would strengthen the winner’s position in the conference race. Houston gets the opportunity to do it in front of its own fans under the lights. University of Houston Athletics

The quarterback matchup is a major attraction, with Drew Mestemaker leading Oklahoma State and Conner Weigman directing Houston. Both offenses have the ability to put pressure on the opposing secondary, which makes protection and third-down execution especially important.

Houston also has a tight end who should command considerably more attention this week. Patrick Overmyer tied the FBS single-game record for touchdown catches by a tight end with four against Kansas State. Oklahoma State must account for him near the goal line, but overcommitting to one target could create opportunities elsewhere.

Three players to watch: Oklahoma State QB Drew Mestemaker, Houston QB Conner Weigman and Houston TE Patrick Overmyer. For scouts, this is a useful opportunity to evaluate quarterback decisions and a tight end’s ability to follow a breakout performance when the defense is preparing specifically for him.

Sportsvival prediction: Houston 35, Oklahoma State 31. Weigman leads a late scoring drive, and the Cougars protect their home field.

6) No. 18 Kentucky at No. 23 Oklahoma

Saturday, October 17, 7:30 p.m. | SEC Network

Gaylord Family–Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Norman, Oklahoma

Two teams with momentum meet in Norman. Oklahoma comes off its victory over Texas, while Kentucky gets another opportunity to prove it belongs in the SEC’s upper-level discussion. The challenge for both is carrying last week’s confidence into a fresh assignment. University of Oklahoma

Oklahoma needs quarterback John Mateer to remain composed and keep possessions moving. His connection with Isaiah Sategna III helped set up the winning field goal against Texas, and that combination gives Kentucky an important assignment on the perimeter.

Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey faces a road environment where communication and ball security will matter. The Wildcats need manageable third downs and enough balance to keep Oklahoma’s defense from attacking without hesitation. A couple of sustained early drives would help take some energy out of the stadium.

Three players to watch: Kentucky QB Kenny Minchey, Oklahoma QB John Mateer and Oklahoma WR Isaiah Sategna III. Minchey gets another meaningful SEC test, while Mateer and Sategna look to carry their late-game execution against Texas into this matchup.

Sportsvival prediction: Oklahoma 27, Kentucky 20. Kentucky stays within reach, but Oklahoma’s defense and home-field advantage help the Sooners close it out.

Keep the Sportsvival Scouting Notebook nearby. These are the matchups that help separate impressive numbers from impressive performances against quality competition.
