The long wait is finally over. College football returns this weekend, bringing back packed stadiums, marching bands, Saturday traditions and the weekly unpredictability that makes the sport special. Week 0 offers only a small sample of what is ahead, but the schedule includes games in Ireland and Brazil, the FBS debuts of two successful former FCS programs and several matchups that could immediately shape the seasons of the teams involved.
Sportsvival will also be watching the best individual performances from across the country throughout the season. Each week, Sportsvival will select the IMPACT HVAC Player of the Week, honoring the player whose production, leadership and impact stood above the rest. Quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers will receive plenty of attention, but defensive players and overlooked stars will have every opportunity to earn the award. North Carolina vs. TCU

The first FBS game of the season takes college football back to Dublin for an intriguing matchup between North Carolina and TCU. Both programs enter 2026 attempting to establish a clearer identity after inconsistent stretches, making this more than a ceremonial overseas opener. TCU should bring the more physical defensive front, while North Carolina must avoid turnovers and find enough explosive plays to keep the Horned Frogs from controlling the tempo. The international setting could produce some early mistakes, but TCU’s strength at the line of scrimmage should eventually make the difference.

San Jose State at No. 13 USC
Saturday, August 29, 3 p.m., NBC
USC begins the season ranked No. 13 in the Sportsvival Top 25 and once again carries the expectation of competing near the top of the Big Ten. San Jose State, coached by Ken Niumatalolo, will try to shorten the game, remain disciplined and prevent the Trojans from turning the opener into a track meet. USC owns a major advantage in overall talent, especially at the skill positions, but the Trojans must show that their defense can consistently control games. San Jose State may hang around during the first half before USC’s depth and speed take over.

NC State vs. Virginia

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The most important game of Week 0 from a conference standpoint takes place in Brazil, where NC State and Virginia open ACC play immediately. There will be no warmup game for either program, and one team will leave South America already facing an uphill climb in the conference race. Virginia enters as a slight favorite, but NC State has enough talent and experience to turn the matchup into a four-quarter battle. This game could be decided by quarterback play, third-down execution and which offensive line handles the unusual opening-week environment better. Expect a competitive game that remains close into the final minutes.

Jacksonville State at North Dakota State

North Dakota State finally enters the FBS after building one of the most dominant programs in FCS history. The Bison could hardly have asked for a more interesting first opponent than Jacksonville State, another program that successfully made the transition from FCS to FBS. Jacksonville State already understands the challenges of moving up, but playing inside the Fargodome is difficult for any opponent. North Dakota State’s physical running game, experienced culture and energized home crowd should help the Bison make an immediate statement in their new era.

Sacramento State at Eastern Michigan

Sacramento State makes its FBS debut on the road against an Eastern Michigan program that has developed a reputation for being physical and competitive. The Hornets possess enough offensive ability to be dangerous, but adjusting to the greater depth and physicality of FBS football will be a season-long process. Eastern Michigan should rely on its experience, protect the football and gradually wear down Sacramento State during the second half. The Hornets can keep it interesting, but the Eagles have the more complete roster entering the opener.

Hawai’i at Stanford

Stanford opens at home against a Hawai’i team capable of creating problems through the passing game. The Cardinal must demonstrate that their rebuilding process is beginning to produce results, especially along the offensive line and on defense. Hawai’i will attempt to spread out the Stanford secondary and create an early shootout, while the Cardinal should try to control possession and keep the Rainbow Warriors’ offense on the sideline. This could become one of the closest games of the weekend, but Stanford’s size and home-field advantage provide a narrow edge.

New Mexico State at Florida State

Florida State enters the season needing a convincing start, and New Mexico State provides the Seminoles with an opportunity to establish control early. The Aggies must avoid turnovers and prevent Florida State’s defensive front from taking over the game. Florida State should own clear advantages in speed, size and roster depth, but the biggest question will be whether the offense plays with discipline and consistency. If the Seminoles handle their business at the line of scrimmage, this should become a comfortable victory before the fourth quarter.

Memphis at UNLV
Saturday, August 29, 10 p.m., FOX
The best late-night matchup of Week 0 could also become one of the season’s most important games in the race for the highest-ranked conference champion outside the four major conferences. Memphis and UNLV both enter the season with legitimate postseason ambitions, meaning the loser will immediately surrender valuable ground. Memphis should bring the more explosive offense, while UNLV will have the home crowd and an opportunity to prove it can remain a contender. Expect points, momentum changes and a game that may not be decided until the final possession.
