Pitt Quarterback Mason Heintschel Named Sportsvival’s Week 1 Impact HVAC Player of the Week
College football’s first full weekend produced several enormous individual performances, but nobody filled the stat sheet quite like Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel.
The sophomore completed 31 of 41 passes for 453 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions as Pitt opened its season with a dominant 59-14 victory over Miami (Ohio). His seven touchdown passes tied the Pitt single-game record and established an ACC record for a season opener.
For that historic performance, Heintschel is Sportsvival’s Week 1 Impact HVAC College Football Player of the Week.
The Runners-Up
1. QB Darian Mensah, Miami
Mensah was nearly perfect in his Miami debut, completing 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. He completed 90 percent of his attempts as the Hurricanes overwhelmed Stanford, 45-6.
2. WR Malachi Toney, Miami
Toney caught 12 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns in Miami’s victory over Stanford. His 234 receiving yards established a new Miami single-game record, surpassing the previous mark of 220 yards set by Eddie Brown in 1984.
3. QB Kevin Jennings, SMU
Jennings completed 26 of 36 passes for a career-high 430 yards and three touchdowns while adding 33 yards on five rushing attempts. He accumulated 463 yards of total offense and led SMU to an important 27-24 road victory over Florida State.
4. RB Jaylin Carter, Memphis
Carter carried the football 19 times for 183 yards and four touchdowns as Memphis defeated Arkansas State, 42-24. He added one reception for 18 yards, giving him 201 total yards from scrimmage. His four rushing touchdowns tied the Memphis single-game record.
5. EDGE Jordan Ross, LSU
Ross delivered the best defensive performance of the weekend during LSU’s 51-10 destruction of Clemson. He recorded four tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one quarterback hurry and returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown. Ross helped the LSU defense hold Clemson to only 145 total yards.
6. QB Dante Moore, Oregon
Moore completed 28 of 37 passes for 378 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions as Oregon survived a serious challenge from Boise State, 34-27. With the score tied in the fourth quarter, Moore connected with Dakorien Moore for the game-winning 62-yard touchdown.
Heintschel’s Journey to Pitt
Heintschel grew up in Oregon, Ohio, and attended Clay High School. He was an extremely productive high school quarterback, accounting for 8,876 yards of total offense and 102 touchdowns during his career.
Despite those numbers, Heintschel was not considered one of the elite national quarterback recruits in the 2025 class. He was rated as a three-star prospect and received scholarship offers from programs including Pitt, Ohio, Coastal Carolina and Liberty.
Heintschel decided to join Pat Narduzzi and the Panthers, but he did not begin his freshman season as Pitt’s starting quarterback. He opened the year behind Eli Holstein before getting his opportunity during the season.
Pitt eventually turned the offense over to Heintschel, who showed considerable promise after entering the lineup. As a freshman, he completed 201 of 316 passes for 2,354 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also contributed 88 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
That experience gave Pitt a proven young quarterback entering the 2026 season, but Heintschel still needed to show that he could take another significant step forward.
His season-opening performance provided a strong answer.
A Record-Setting Opening Performance
Heintschel immediately looked comfortable against Miami (Ohio). He made accurate throws throughout the field, distributed the football to several different receivers and consistently finished Pitt’s possessions with touchdowns.
Seven different Pitt players caught touchdown passes from Heintschel, showing how effectively the quarterback operated the entire offense instead of relying upon one primary target.
Heintschel completed more than 75 percent of his passes, averaged 11 yards per attempt and did not turn the football over. He produced 453 passing yards despite Pitt controlling the game and facing little pressure during the second half.
The performance tied the Pitt record for touchdown passes in a game and gave Heintschel the most passing yards recorded by an FBS quarterback during the opening weekend.
One great game does not define an entire season, especially when it comes against a Miami (Ohio) team Pitt was expected to defeat. However, throwing seven touchdown passes is an extraordinary accomplishment regardless of the opponent.
Heintschel showed accuracy, command and the ability to create explosive plays. More importantly, he looked like a quarterback capable of leading Pitt into the ACC championship race.
Pitt will face a more difficult test against UCF in Week 2, but Heintschel could not have asked for a better beginning to his sophomore season.
