Sportsvival Overview
Some prospects catch your attention with their scoring. Others make you notice them because they are involved in everything. Dimian Zhilkin, commonly known as Dima, brings both qualities.
The Saginaw captain combines offensive ability with a relentless approach that makes him difficult to ignore. He can score, create opportunities for teammates and make opponents uncomfortable. His game carries the kind of energy that can change a shift even before the puck reaches his stick.
For Sportsvival, the appeal is how those pieces fit together: a skilled winger who welcomes competition and has already earned significant responsibility.
Background
Born in Moscow, Russia, Zhilkin moved to Canada as a child and grew up in Oakville, Ontario. His hockey journey included developing with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens before Saginaw selected him 19th overall in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection. Before joining the Spirit, he produced 26 goals and 47 assists for 73 points in 60 games with the Jr. Canadiens.
Hockey also runs through his family. His older brother, Danny Zhilkin, was selected by Winnipeg in the third round of the 2022 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut in January 2026. Dima wears No. 71, reversing his brother’s No. 17.
Saginaw named Dima its 27th captain on January 9, 2026, while he was still just 17. His work habits, resilience and leadership helped earn him that responsibility. He continues to wear the “C” this season, leading the Spirit while handling the attention that comes with being a top 10 prospect.
Zhilkin has also committed to the University of Michigan for the 2027–28 season, giving him a potential opportunity to continue his development against older collegiate competition.
Past Statistics and Current Production

2025–26 OHL regular season Saginaw 59 36 39 75

2026–27 OHL, through October 12 Saginaw 8 9 7 16
Zhilkin earned OHL First All-Rookie Team recognition after recording 43 points in 54 games during the 2024–25 season. He followed that with a substantial offensive jump, finishing his second season with 36 goals and 75 points in 59 games. His goal total more than doubled, while his production increased from approximately 0.80 points per game to 1.27.
His international résumé is impressive as well. Zhilkin helped Canada earn bronze at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, scoring three goals in five games. At the 2026 Under-18 World Championship, he led Canada in goals and points with five goals and seven points in five games. He then contributed three goals and an assist in two appearances at the World Junior Summer Showcase.
The strong production has continued this fall. Through October 12, Zhilkin has nine goals and seven assists for 16 points in eight games. Against Windsor on October 12, he scored in regulation and supplied the deciding shootout goal in Saginaw’s 3–2 victory, extending his point streak to eight games.
Strengths
Competitive drive and puck pressure: Zhilkin’s motor is a major part of his identity. He pursues loose pucks, engages opponents and stays involved in the play. That pressure can force defenders into hurried decisions and create opportunities for his teammates. He brings an intensity that gives him ways to contribute even when he is not scoring.
Speed and offensive creativity: Zhilkin can attack with pace while handling the puck. His ability to use deception and change his approach makes him difficult to defend in transition. He can challenge a defender directly, draw attention and find a teammate, or attack an opening himself.
Finishing ability: His 36-goal season demonstrated that he can consistently turn opportunities into production. Zhilkin combines shooting ability with the willingness to work into dangerous areas. His scoring and playmaking totals also show that opponents cannot simply defend him as a shooter.
Willingness to compete in traffic: Zhilkin does not allow a height disadvantage to keep him away from contested areas. He is willing to battle along the boards and attack through contact. That mentality is important when evaluating whether his offense can translate against stronger competition.
Leadership: Being trusted with Saginaw’s captaincy at 17 speaks to the responsibility he has earned. His approach gives teammates an example to follow, and he has continued producing while carrying that leadership role.
Areas to Improve
Discipline: Zhilkin accumulated 100 penalty minutes in 59 regular-season games last season. His competitive edge is valuable, but he must continue learning how to use it effectively. Staying involved physically while avoiding unnecessary penalties will keep him available when his team needs him most.
Creating against a set defense: His speed is an asset, but the next challenge is consistently generating offense when opponents take away open ice. Quick passing decisions, movement after releasing the puck and patience in the offensive zone will help him create against tighter checking.
Defensive positioning: An aggressive player must recognize when to pressure and when to protect space. Zhilkin’s continued development should include balancing his pursuit of the puck with his coverage responsibilities. Maintaining good positioning will help him become a more complete winger.
Strength and balance against older competition: His willingness to battle is already appealing. Maintaining possession, protecting the puck and finishing plays through professional contact will present a greater challenge. Continued physical development will help him get more out of the competitive qualities he already possesses.
NHL Comparison: Brad Marchand
Sportsvival’s NHL comparison is Brad Marchand, based on style of play.
The connection is the combination of offensive skill, competitiveness and agitation. Zhilkin can create opportunities while making the game uncomfortable for opponents. He brings energy, welcomes physical engagement and is willing to work in difficult areas.
The comparison describes how he approaches the game, rather than predicting that he will duplicate Marchand’s career. Reaching that level would require continued improvement in his decisions, defensive reliability and ability to produce against stronger competition.
For Zhilkin, the goal is to preserve the edge that makes him effective while developing the control and consistency that allow a skilled, competitive winger to thrive in the NHL.
Final Draft Outlook
Dimian Zhilkin is a top 10 prospect for the 2027 NHL Draft.
His combination of scoring ability, creativity, competitive energy and leadership makes him one of the most interesting players in this class. He has the potential to develop into a top-six NHL winger who contributes on the power play and brings an edge to every shift.
Continued improvement in discipline, defensive positioning and creating offense against tight checking will help prepare him for the next level. Zhilkin has the talent to attract attention and the personality in his game to keep it.
