Arizona Cardinals Draft Outlook: Why Arizona Should Build The Foundation At No. 3

Sportsvival continues its team-by-team look at the top of the 2026 NFL Draft, and the Arizona Cardinals enter draft season holding the No. 3 overall pick after a 3-14 finish. Arizona made the franchise-changing move to release Kyler Murray, but that does not mean the answer is forcing a quarterback at No. 3. The smarter path is to keep building the roster, stay patient at quarterback, and use this premium pick on one of the best non-quarterback players in the class.

Additions

Arizona has been active in reshaping the roster. The Cardinals officially signed guard Isaac Seumalo and defensive lineman Roy Lopez, brought back defensive lineman L.J. Collier, kicker Chad Ryland, and punter Blake Gillikin, and later added back wide receiver Simi Fehoko. Team coverage has also tracked the arrivals or expected arrivals of wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, quarterback Gardner Minshew II, running back Tyler Allgeier, offensive linemen Elijah Wilkinson and Matt Pryor, long snapper Casey Kreiter, safety Andrew Wingard, and the returns of running back Bam Knight and cornerback Starling Thomas V. Arizona has also kept James Conner in the fold.

Subtractions

The losses are just as important to this draft conversation. Arizona officially moved on from Kyler Murray, Dalvin Tomlinson, Bilal Nichols, Akeem Davis-Gaither, and Evan Brown. The Cardinals also lost safety Jalen Thompson in free agency, with team coverage noting his move to Dallas. When a team loses its starting quarterback, a veteran safety, a starting interior offensive lineman, and multiple defensive front pieces, it becomes even clearer that this roster still needs major help in the trenches and on defense.

Top 3 Needs

Sportsvival sees Arizona’s top three needs as offensive tackle, edge rusher, and quarterback. Offensive tackle stands out because right tackle has been identified by team draft coverage as the biggest hole on offense. Edge rusher remains a major need because Arizona still needs more pressure and more front-seven impact. Defensive line is right there too after the departures of Tomlinson and Nichols, even with Lopez back in the mix.

  • Offensive tackle may be the cleanest long-term answer. Arizona is trying to reset the roster, and when a team is in that position, building the offensive line is often the smartest move. A stronger front gives the Cardinals a better chance to stabilize the offense now and puts the next long-term quarterback in a much better situation down the line.

  • Edge rusher is the other major path, and Arizona could absolutely justify going defense here. But with Murray gone and the offense entering a transition phase, there is a strong argument that the Cardinals should first make sure the foundation is in place up front before chasing another splash pick. The additions at quarterback and running back make even more sense if Arizona comes out of this draft with a true long-term answer at tackle.

  • Even with Murray gone, Sportsvival does not believe Arizona should take a quarterback here. The Cardinals have added veteran help to the room, and this roster still has too many other holes to justify forcing that position with the third pick. No. 3 overall is too valuable for a panic move when Arizona can use it on a premium lineman and keep building the roster the right way.

The Pick

That brings Sportsvival to the projected choice: Francis Mauigoa, OT, Miami. Arizona may look hard at pass rushers, and there is logic to that route. But Mauigoa feels like the best fit for where this team stands today. The Cardinals’ own draft tracker has pointed to him as the overwhelming favorite if Arizona goes offensive line, and that fit is easy to understand. He would give the Cardinals a potential long-term answer at right tackle, pair with Paris Johnson Jr. as a possible bookend tackle setup, and help Arizona build the type of offensive foundation it needs before making any future franchise-quarterback decision. Sportsvival’s pick for Arizona at No. 3 is Francis Mauigoa. Although, Sportsvival would not be shocked to see Arizona move this pick to obtain more draft capital. They are a long way from the finish line.
