College Park, MD- Maryland needed a closer, and Andre Mills delivered.
The sophomore guard scored a game-high 21 points, including the Terps’ final seven, and sealed the win with a breakaway alley‑oop dunk as Maryland outlasted Washington 64–60 on Saturday afternoon at the XFINITY Center.
First Half: Maryland Steadies After Slow Start
Washington opened the game with early confidence. Zoom Diallo scored on a goaltend, and Wesley Yates drilled back‑to‑back threes as the Huskies jumped out to a seven‑point lead at the first media timeout.
Maryland responded with a Darius Adams three‑point play, followed by baskets from Solomon Washington and Elijah Saunders to trim the deficit. After the under‑12 timeout, Mills and Isaiah Watts combined for four free throws to give Maryland its first lead of the afternoon.
Guillermo Del Pino and Watts knocked down consecutive threes to keep the Terps in front, but Washington’s Hannes Steinbach scored just before the horn to cut Maryland’s lead to two at the break.
Halftime: Maryland 34, Washington 32
Second Half: Punch, Counterpunch
Washington briefly reclaimed the lead behind two Yates free throws, but Saunders answered with a three. The teams traded blows throughout the half, neither leading by more than a possession for long.
Saunders stayed hot from deep, Diallo kept Washington afloat with timely scoring, and Steinbach’s activity around the rim continued to cause problems. With under eight minutes left, Diallo buried another three to put the Huskies up 52–49.
Mills responded immediately.
He tied the game with a three of his own, then matched Diallo basket for basket as the tension built inside XFINITY Center.
Closing Time: Mills Takes Over
With the game tied in the final minute, Mills calmly sank two free throws to put Maryland ahead 62–60. Washington had a final chance, but Del Pino elevated for a clean block on Koren Peterson’s potential tying shot.
Mills sprinted out in transition, caught an alley‑oop feed, and hammered home the dunk that iced the game—punctuating a dominant closing stretch.
