The Notre Dame Fighting Irish travel to Pittsburgh to face the Pitt Panthers Saturday in a non-conference matchup of historic rivals. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 51-21-1, including wins in the last four games.
RB1 -v- RB1
This game will feature two of the best running backs in the country: Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love and Pitt’s Desmond Reid. Love is No. 5 in the FBS in rushing yards with 988 and is tied for No. 3 with 13 rushing TDs. Reid has been given a clean bill of health from Pitt’s medical staff, as head coach Pat Narduzzi said during his press conference this week. “He’s as healthy as he’s been,” Narduzzi said while speaking with the media on Thursday. “You know, he wasn’t healthy going in, even to Florida State, to be honest with you. He’s practiced more this week than he has.”
Keys For Pitt
The Pitt passing game against Notre Dame’s pass defense. The Irish are No. 88 in the FBS in pass defense, giving up 232.2 passing yards per game. Freshman QB Mason Heintschel has been on a heater since being named the starter before the Boston College game. Pitt’s offense averages 302.6 passing yards per game, 10th in the country.
Keys for Notre Dame
The exact opposite of Pitt, Notre Dame’s key is their rushing attack against the stout Pitt run defense. Love and company average 194.4 rushing yards per game. The Pitt defense only gives up 80.9 rushing yards per game, 3rd in the nation. The key for Notre Dame will be to get some push on that Pitt front seven to create short 3rd down attempts.
Prediction
This game will be a tough one for the Panthers, especially if Notre Dame can get the passing game going. Pitt’s pass defense has been leaky. The offense, led by Heintschel and Reid, will do enough to get the upset. Notre Dame QB CJ Carr is very capable of beating Pitt on his own, but the Pitt defense will make enough plays to put the game in the hands of the Panther offense. Word is Pitt K Trey Butkowski is out due to illness. But backup Sam Carpenter will hit the winning field goal for the Panthers. Pitt wins 27-24
