Georgetown Survives Providence in Senior Night Thriller, 80–79
WASHINGTON, D.C. — On a night built for emotion, energy, and edge, Georgetown delivered all three. Behind a career-best 25 points and 10 rebounds from Vince Iwuchukwu, the Hoyas held off a furious Providence comeback to escape with an 80–79 Senior Night victory at Capital One Arena.
Hoyas Punch Back After Early Providence Fireworks
Providence came out swinging, landing the first real blows of the night. A deep Stefan Vaaks three and a thunderous Jamier Jones alley‑oop jolted the Friars ahead and quieted the home crowd. Georgetown needed a spark, and Malik Mack supplied it—burying a midrange jumper to end a scoring drought, then converting a three‑point play to pull the Hoyas within striking distance.
Moments later, Kayvaun Mulready muscled in a tough finish to trim the deficit to one at the under‑12 timeout, setting the tone for a half defined by toughness and tempo swings.
From there, the game turned into a grind. Oswin Erhunmwunse scored on a putback, Mack answered again, and Caleb Williams slashed through traffic for a go‑ahead layup. Georgetown finally seized control with a 7–0 run, capped by an Iwuchukwu hammer dunk that forced a Providence timeout.
The Hoyas leaned heavily on their size, feeding Iwuchukwu possession after possession. He delivered—finishing through contact, drawing fouls, and anchoring a paint attack Providence simply couldn’t match.
Georgetown closed the half hitting four of its final six shots, pairing efficient offense with a suffocating defensive stretch that included a shot‑clock violation. The result: a 10‑point halftime lead.

Friars Flip the Script Out of the Break
Whatever message Providence delivered at halftime, it landed.
The Friars stormed out with a 9–0 run, fueled by another deep Vaaks triple and a determined drive from Jaylin Sellers. Suddenly, the Hoyas’ cushion evaporated. Sellers drilled another three to tie the game at 47, and the arena tightened.
Georgetown tried to steady itself, but Providence kept swinging. Vaaks answered a Malready bucket, and then Ryan Mela caught fire—burying back‑to‑back threes to push the Friars ahead by seven before the under‑12 timeout.
The Hoyas were wobbling. Mack’s tough layup cut the deficit to three, but Providence’s shot‑making barrage had shifted the momentum entirely.
Trading Haymakers Down the Stretch
The final eight minutes turned into a heavyweight exchange.
Sellers hit a three. Williams answered with one of his own. Jones dunked. Williams splashed another triple.
Providence nudged ahead by five after a Jones three‑point play, but Georgetown refused to fold.
That’s when Iwuchukwu took over.
The 7‑footer ignited a 10–0 Georgetown run, throwing down two emphatic dunks and powering the Hoyas back in front by five with 2:38 remaining.
Providence finally snapped its drought when Sellers drilled yet another three with a minute left. Georgetown came up empty on the next trip, giving the Friars a chance to steal it. but Sellers’ go‑ahead three rimmed out.
The final sequence was chaos. Malready missed a layup. Jones drew a foul and calmly sank two free throws to tie the game. A deflection sent the ball out of bounds off Georgetown… but after review, the Hoyas regained possession.
They never gave it back.
